Lemon Infused Vodka

Learning how to make flavored vodka is quite simple and allows for creativity. Of all alcohols, vodka serves as one of the best for flavor infusions because its neutral nature easily carries the flavors with which it''s infused.
Because your final product will only be as good as the ingredients you use, start with a moderate to high quality vodka as a base for your flavored vodka recipe. Although low-quality vodkas may hold flavor, they won''t be as smooth or tasty as premium brands. Keep in mind, however, that top-shelf vodkas are best enjoyed on their own. A good rule of thumb is to simply choose a middle-of-the-road vodka that you would also enjoy straight.

To make lemon flavored vodkas, follow these steps:

Peel the zest of 3 large lemons making sure to leave the rind behind. (that will make the vodka taste bitter) I used my sharp pearing knife to cut the skin off the lemon in a few long strips. This makes it prettier in the bottle.

Add the lemon peel to a sealable bottle and add vodka.

Cover the container tightly and store it in a cool, dark, dry place.

Shake the container gently every couple of days.

In about a week you should be able to serve it but test it first. Chill it before serving and make your favorite cocktail using it.

I'm giving mine away as a hostess gift for the holidays.

Karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609618742596617232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5972640171984930936.post-60863948590734525202012-12-17T16:36:00.000-08:002012-12-17T16:36:27.889-08:00Royal Icing for Cut Out CookiesWe've all made that icing with the powder sugar and water, right? Well, let's get all grown up and make something a little more sophisticated by adding a simple ingredient, Meringue Powder. Don't get me wrong, there's a time and place for the plain old icing but this is great and versatile. Plus it makes your cookies look professional.
This icing dries candy-hard, which is ideal for decorating cookies, flowers, detailing, but not so good for decorating cakes.

Here we go:
3 T Wilton Meringue Powder
4 cups sifted confectioners sugar
4-6 T water

if your making stiffer icing, you'll want 1-2 T less water.

Beat all ingredients at low speed for 7-10 minutes until icing forms peaks. At this point I separate the icing into two batches. One that will remain as it, stiff, that I cake use as "piping" and the other stays in the mixing bowl to my my "flood icing". I add 1-2 T water to the bowl and thin the icing out again, using this as my "flood" icing.
You can add food coloring to either and decorate till your hearts content.
Here's a really fun and cute way to make cut out cookies AND ice cream sandwiches. These cookies look so pretty and bakery-like. I'm always impressed with the finished product. It actually looks like I'm the baker in the family.

Sugar Cookie (Cut Out Dough)

2 c butter, softened
3 c sugar
4 eggs
1 T. vanilla extract
7 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and flavorings and mix well. Stir flour, baking powder and salt together. Add to batter and mix well.
Chill 3-4 hours or overnight before using.
Roll dough into a log about 2" thick

This week I was featured on Design Dazzle!

Here's my post:

I'm Karyn, from Sugar Swagger. In the past I've contributed to the Summer Camp series on Design Dazzle and showed my summer picnic ideas. http://designdazzle.blogspot.com/2012/06/summer-camp-picnic-basket.html. I'm honored to have been asked back to share some holiday fun with you and your kids.
My husband is the baker in the family so when I asked him to make ice cream for our ice cream social, he was excited to involve the kids again. So today I'm going to show you how to put on your very own Christmas Ice Cream Social.
I recently bought a really large bag of peeled garlic from Costco and then saw that it was soon about to expire so I made some garlic paste. It's really easy to make and MAKES COOKING EASIER. So every time you need to add garlic and Olive Oil to someone you just walk over to your freezer and scoop and spoonful out. This is great for making garlic bread too. The consistence to perfect.

Here's how to make it:
1. Clean the garlic, then peel it by removing skin. I bought a large bag of peeled garlic from Costco so I didn't need to peel and clean it. You can do the same.
2. Using a food processor, insert the grading blade. Add as many garlic cloves as you like or will fit.

3. Remove the shredded garlic from the food processor and place in a bowl.
4. Switch the blade to the long blade, shown in the photo and add the garlic back to the food processor.
5. Pour enough olive oil to create a creamy texture. Process this for several seconds until all of the garlic is thoroughly blended into the oil.

6. Scrape the garlic mixture into small freezer containers, label and date them.

This can be used as needed and will remain soft enough to portion out with a spoon when it is time to use for cooking.

my pirate inspired pumpkin. I've always wanted to try this and if you have the right tools it's acutally not hard at all. I have carving tools from art school that I used for wood carvings so I pulled them out. If you have ceramic tools that you've used for clay those will work really well too.

It takes about 15 minutes to make and it's super yummy. I brought this to a party the other night and it was gone in no time. Plus the guys loved it too since there's bacon in it. Who doesn't love bacon?
My mom and I laugh about this dress because I bought it for $14 at storage locker sale and it cost my $6 to paint it black some 15 years ago. This thing will outlast us all. It was fine the way it was really just wanted to change it up for my sons new room. So with some paint, a roller and some new knobs I bought at Lowes he has a new dresser. All for under $40 no less. Inspiration: Pottery Barn Kids

I've had these boring brown chairs for a while and thought they needed a change. My home is white, gray and cream and tan and I wanted something that would blend and transition to every holiday. So if I'm decorating for Christmas, my ORANGE chairs won't clash or Halloween and my Red chairs won't clash. Ya gotta think about these things, right? I wanted peices that pop, like pillows, art work, vases, throws, sooooo this is my chair transformation.

Here's a look at our school Spirit Baskets that were created for this years' school auction. Each grade was assigned a color. Parents were asked to bring in anything in their childs color theme to add to the basket. There's all sorts of random items, from iPods, Uggs and Kindels to paper lanters and Mike and Ike's and dish towels. They were an enormous hit and raised a lot of money for the school. And to the ladies who built them, hats off to you.

For the kids biggest school fundraiser of the year, they ask each class to complete an art piece that will be auctioned off during the event. So with Modge Podge in hand, I asked the first graders to collect candy wrappers over the summer. I had each student decoupage two candy wrappers on to regular drawing paper. We let them dry over night then using a map I had blown up, I cut the wrappers into each shapely state and placed all the states together again to create a country.
We added a plaque to the corner, too.

My kids love sushi so I thought for sushi night I'd make some fun treats that trick the kids.
Here's what we made. What is it? A sweet, pop in your mouth treat, made with marshmallows, coconut, Swedish Fish and licorice. So much fun.

Here's what you'll need to make these sweet treats.

1 can vanilla frosting
1 Bag of marshmallows
Coconut
Swedish Fish
Lime flavored Tootsie Rolls
black rolled licorice

First take a marshmallow and cover it on frosting, then roll it in coconut. Next, place a Swedish Fish on top (securing with a tab of frosting), finally wrap with licorice. I softened up the Tootsie Rolls in microwave then easily pulled apart for the accent of wasabi.Karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609618742596617232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5972640171984930936.post-68771225018578119242012-08-04T16:51:00.002-07:002012-08-04T16:51:44.488-07:00Our New HomeSo excited to be moving into our new home. It's not so much the money that's spent, it's the time and effort we put into a new adventure like hiking, kayaking, camping, fishing, hunting for sea shells, mini golf, etc... sometimes I feel like I've done all those things in less than a week.
I'm a person who has a hard time sitting still so a lot of this activity is my doing but I need my kids to understand that all this may be a rarity; not every child gets out and kayaks with their parents or possesses the patience to make homemade ice cream with them. Now let me say that this... in no way does this make me special or a super mom. I'm not. But it got me thinking about being appreciative of what we currently have instead of looking straight past it and on to the next thing.

John Gray, author of Children are from Heaven (Harper Collins) wrote, “the whole basis of happiness is to appreciate what you have at the moment.” We all want our children to be happy, so what can parents do to help children appreciate the simple things in life?

Here's four things to get us moving in the right direction.

1. Model Gratitude

The most effective way to help your child see the light is to be a grateful person. Experts call this incidental learning. My Mom always called it “monkey see, monkey do.” Children are natural-born mimics. They use their parents as a how-to guide to navigate the world. If they witness their parents routinely expressing sincere gratitude (kids have an innate ability to detect insincerity), they are much more apt to express it themselves. Express gratitude to your child on a regular basis. Let the people around you know how much you appreciate what they do. Not only will this set a good example for your kids, it’ll make you feel pretty good, too.

2. Expect your child to show gratitude.

Parents, noble creatures that they are, think nothing of getting up three hours early so they can make lunches, check homework, get everyone dressed, fed and ready to go in time to drive Suzie to before-school band practice and Timmy to his early morning paper route. The fact that neither Suzie nor Timmy thought to say thanks doesn’t even register in Mom’s overworked mind. As much as children may wish, or even truly believe, that the world revolves around them, it doesn’t. Noticing and acknowledging all the work that goes into creating their day is a skill that will serve them the rest of their lives. Letting them know in a non-demanding way the effort you put out will usually be enough to remind them to say thank you. When they do express appreciation for all you do (or even for a little of what you do), accept gratitude graciously.

3. Go guilt-free.

That said don’t demand gratitude or try the gratitude-by-guilt method. We all remember the “starving kids in Africa” who would have been thrilled to have even a portion of the liver (or beets) you were rejecting. I don’t know about you, but thinking about kids who would enjoy eating my leftovers did NOT make me any more thankful I got to eat the yucky food. It just made me resent little starving kids. I also wondered what the moms in Africa told their kids to get them to eat.

4. Commit random (but regular) acts of service and gratitude.

Incorporating gratitude into daily life is easier than you might think. Randomly throughout the day, find ways of expressing gratitude. During the bedtime ritual, ask your child to name three things he enjoyed about the day, or tell your child three things you appreciate about him. Make writing thank you notes a priority. The note has to be written before the gift can be used. Put a note in a lunch sack or in a backpack expressing appreciation for your child. Make an effort to thank people who help you on a daily basis: the school crossing guard, the librarian, a cashier, etc.

I never did learn to appreciate beets. I did, however, learn to appreciate having a mother who cared enough to attempt to force nutrition into my ungrateful system. I hope someday my kids will, too
Karynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16609618742596617232noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5972640171984930936.post-60898118736238295182012-07-09T09:28:00.003-07:002012-07-09T09:32:57.569-07:00I heart POSCA pensMy friend at http://craftiliciousu.com/ turned me onto these markers about a year ago and I can't put them down. I've used them for all kinda of projects. Unlike some paint pens, I never experience flooding, clogging or streaking with these. They come in a variety of sizes; extra fine, fine, medium, broad and extra broad. They even have florescent colors and glitter pens in some sizes. What's more - you can buy them individually.

If your kids want to trick out their skateboard, surfboard or bike this is the way to go. I can't say enough about these paint markers.

Check out http://craftiliciousu.com/ and see what my friend has done with these pens. SHE'S AMAZING!
John's birthday is never too far so we decided to make a t-shirt for him based on the T created by thebluebasket.blogspot.com but of course I need to change it up a bit.

First, because I had trouble with the printable template she had on her page and secondly, I always have to make "inspiration projects" personal to me and my family.

Here's what you'll need:

- Plain white shirt (I got mine at Target)

- Paper and pencil for laying out your design

- Fabric paint or fabric markers ( I like to use POSCA Markers, they are awesome)

- Cars to drive on your town and maybe even some little people)

First I laid out a basic sketch of our "town" on a piece of paper to get an idea of the "places" we wanted to add to our town. We wanted to add places my husband likes and visits so we added a "bike path" (because my husband often rides his bike to work), "wine country" (because we live in wine country and we love wine), a "movie theater" (because we love seeing movies together), a "water park" (because we have a season pass and take the kids often) a "camping" spot (because we love camping together), a "hospital" (because my hubby is a doctor) and a "fire station" at the request of my son. I love it because it's so personal.

I put a layer of smooth cardboard paper between the front and back of the tshirt so it wouldn't go through to the front. Next, I free handed the outside path of the town on the back of the tshirt. Then filled in the "places". Next, I called the kids into action and asked them to paint the town. They enjoyed painting it and deciding the colors of each building.

It doesn't have to be perfect. It's from the kids (and mom) and it's for dad who will 100% love anything the kids make so don't worry about perfection. It's not going to happen unless you and your kids are painting prodigies.

Have fun!

The first items we tackled in the Things to do Before Your Kids Leave Home book had to do with building a bird house. But like I mentioned in my into about the book, I'm not taking each entry literally, more figuratively. So instead if building a build house we make bird seed feeders that were super easy and pretty cool, thank you very much. Those birds didn't waste any time diving in for some dinner.

Supplies Needed:

2 cups water

3 cups birdseed

2 unflavored gelatin packets (1/4 ounce each)

Cookie Cutters (any shape will do)

Cookie Sheet lined with wax paper

Twine, String or Ribbon

Directions:

Heat 2 cups of water in a pan. Add in 2 packets of unflavored gelatin packets. Stir until the gelatin is dissolved.

Remove pan from heat.

Stir in 3 cups birdseed until it is evenly coated.

Allow mixture to cool until gelatin is thick and coats all the birdseed.

Place the cookie cutters on the lined cookie sheet. NOTE: We didn’t use cooking spray and didn’t have any problems with them sticking. However, you may need to spray the foil and inside of the cookie cutters.

While holding the straw, drop spoonfuls of bird seed mixture into each cookie cutter. Then add enough twine so that it can be hung. Add more to the top making sure to pack the mixture in until the cookie cutter is completely full of seed.

Set aside and allow mixture to harden, turning once. Should be ready in about 8 hours or less.

I've read some articles on how to cool down soup without watering it down and they are pretty ridiculous to me. I remember when I was kid, my mom made soup and though an ice cube in to cool it off. Who's mom didn't, right? I did it too. Then I had a thought. What about the colorful ice cube balls someone gave me for festive looking cocktails? I throw one or two into cool the soup down at my son's request and voila, soup that won't burn the tongue. WARNING: don't use ice cubes that are too small or give to small kids that might try to eat them. I remove the ice balls after a minute or so and wash them before returning to the freezer.

You can pick these up at all kinds places, even dollar stores. Enjoy!
